How Do We Stay Safe from Hurricanes, Thunderstorms, and Floods this Year?
Welcome 2018! Another new year and another set of New Year Resolutions… and goals. And by goals, I’m referring to the ones that Mother Nature has on her New Year’s List. The year 2017 was a force to be reckoned with, and some of us weren’t ready for it. There were 10 hurricanes in a row this past year. That’s a lot of Mother Nature – and it all happened in 90 days. Four hurricanes had such a major impact on the United States that we are still recovering from the destruction.
Mother Nature has her own New Year’s List.
Most people don’t realize that a hurricane is more than heavy winds and rain. In a single day, an average hurricane releases the same amount of energy equal to 500,000 atomic bombs exploding at once. With statistics like that, it’s no wonder people struggle with how to stay safe during a hurricane. Hurricane Irma was such a high caliber hurricane it had an energy level of 7 trillion watts. It was so intense, earthquake seismometers were able to record its activity. The impact from Hurricane Irma was so catastrophic that an estimated 6 million people in Florida were without electricity and essentials for days. I’d like to stop right there – that’s only one hurricane that impacted 6 million people in Florida alone.
Unfortunately hurricanes also bring tornadoes and thunderstorms with deadly lightning and flooding. Hurricane Harvey’s 51 inches of rain caused flooding so severe in Texas, it forced close to 39,000 people out of their homes. The National Weather Service had to add colors to their chart to account for Hurricane Harvey’s rainfall amount. Homes were covered over in water, and streets collapsed due to the water flow that came crashing down. For hurricane season, it’s a must to know how to stay safe during floods also. If you are being told to evacuate, do not delay. Listen to the advisories, Hurricane Harvey was not an unexpected storm – and most hurricanes aren’t. Planning ahead is smart, but knowing when to change your plans is even smarter.
When a hurricane makes landfall, it’s obvious Mother Nature is in charge. The best we can do is prepare for what could be the worst.
Mother Nature didn’t share what her goals were last year. So, I don’t expect that to happen this year either. That’s one of the reasons why we’re planning ahead. Our main New Year’s Resolution is to Stay Safe in 2018. Life is filled with a lot of up and down moments – that’s just the way life is. We do the best we can to follow our own New Year’s List, but sometimes it feels like life sweeps us up and we lose our footing.
I believe people are doing things differently this year to Stay Safe in 2018. Last year proved to us that’s what we need to.
Stocking up on emergency supplies now, instead of June when hurricane season begins, is the new norm and on a lot of people’s New Year’s Resolution List. Knowing how to stay safe during a hurricane is not something to take lightly. If you are not a mandatory evacuee, you are still going to be in the line of fire for tornadoes and thunderstorms during any hurricane. At The Home Security Superstore we have survival gear and supplies to help keep you safe in these situations.
Food and water are the essentials for any natural disaster.
So how do we stay safe this time around?
Our food supply kits contain food to last you 5 days or even up to 1 year depending on which one you choose, and we have single MRE meals too. Wise Company food kits contain dehydrated and freeze dried meals, which gives them an extended shelf life of up to 25 years. While food is one thing you will want to have, experts say a body can’t last more than just 3 days without water. Emergency water supply products help you cover this essential need. You can get water tablets and purification products and water filter straws, plus portable water storage reservoirs that range from 30-60 gallons or single water bladder packs.
If in doubt, Survival Backpacks are the way to go. You can choose a backpack that contains all essentials, pre-packaged and ready for you when you need it. This Wise bag includes provisions for 5 days: first aid kit, food and water, portable stove and fuel, flashlight, whistle and matches, blanket and poncho, and a deck of cards.
No one wants to come face to face with a natural disaster unprepared.
Let’s work on this together. Mother Nature has her agenda, and we have ours. The Home Security Superstore is here to help you Stay Safe in 2018.
